An enthusiastic and knowledgeable Teacher of Classics is required to cover a colleague's Maternity Leave for four terms.
This position would suit an experienced teacher, or a Classics graduate who is looking to gain initial classroom experience; Highgate welcomes applications from candidates without formal teaching qualifications. Being able to teach Latin is essential. Candidates who can also teach Ancient Greek and Classical Civilisation would be at an advantage.
The DepartmentClassics Department's colleagues teach Latin, Ancient Greek and Classical Civilisation from Year 7 to Year 13 and Ancient History in the Sixth Form. The Department is proud of its academic record, especially of the numbers who successfully take Latin to GCSE and to A Level. In recent years, several pupils have gone on to study a wide range of classical degrees at university. Pupils regularly take up places at Oxbridge. Examination results are excellent: last year 90% of pupils taking classical subjects at A-Level achieved an A* or A, 97% of pupils taking a classical language at GCSE an 8 or 9.
The department aims to foster an enthusiasm for the ancient world, in all its facets, while placing particular emphasis on the analytical skills acquired through the study of Latin and Greek. We aim to make the experience of learning classical subjects exciting and challenging through a varied use of approaches, materials and a stimulating curriculum. We aim to emphasise the value of classical subjects first and foremost for their own sake, but also for their relationship with the modern world and other academic disciplines. Members of the department work cooperatively, sharing expertise and resources as well as volunteering for extra responsibilities as and when necessary. The department is well equipped and resourced; it has its own office area and a frequently-used set of class iPads.
In Lent 2024 a programme of events in our biennial 'Classics Week' included talks by academics, classical readings and re-enactments of gladiatorial games! Recent productions of classical plays at the school include Aristophanes' Frogs, Oedipus Rex, and Medea. The department is also involved in partnership work: Sixth Form pupils use the Minimus textbook to teach Latin to pupils in Years 5 and 6 from a local primary school on a weekly basis to boost their literacy.
The department regularly takes pupils to museums in London and further afield. There is an annual trip for Year 7 to Hadrian's wall and biennial trips for older pupils to either Greece or Italy. During October half-term 2024 40 pupils and staff visited sites in the Bay of Naples including Pompeii and Herculaneum. There is a vibrant Classics Society, organised and run by Year 13 pupils: recent pupil-led talks have focused on Achilles and Patroclus' 'defiant love' and a debate on the truth behind Gnaeus Calpurnius Piso's death; visiting speakers have ranged from Professor Armand D'Angour on Greek music, to Daniel Morden, a professional storyteller performing tales from Ovid's Metamorphoses.
'There is a great camaraderie in the department and a shared passion for classics and the teaching of it. Classical subjects attract some of the best pupils in the school whom it is an absolute pleasure to teach.'
- James Morrow, Acting Head of Classics

Our community extends beyond the school, through partnerships, charity work and our commitment to equality, inclusion and sustainability. All members of our school community are encouraged to look outwards and play an active role.

Charitable work and sustainabilityAs an independent school, we want to use our position as a charity effectively: to make high-quality education accessible to as many children as possible - through our bursary programme at Highgate and through our work with local state schools. We have partnerships with over 60 state schools across 7 London boroughs, and we are the principal educational sponsor for London Academy of Excellence, Tottenham - an academically-selective state sixth form in a community where such opportunities are lacking.
Alongside this, our staff and pupils undertake charitable activities throughout the year. These range from staff giving up their time to neighbourhood schools and charitable organisations, focused fundraising campaigns, to pupils undertaking community work in the local area or further afield.
As a school, we have a central role to play in educating our pupils, staff and parents about the importance of environmental sustainability. We are taking positive action to adapt our operational performance to tackle the negative effects of climate change. We encourage all our staff to reflect upon their personal and professional practices, to support our environmental agenda and to make positive changes wherever possible.
