A rare opportunity has arisen for an outstanding and experienced Maths Teacher at Westminster Under School.
We are looking for a bright, caring and enthusiastic individual with a genuine passion for Maths who will relish the opportunity to become a teacher at Westminster Under School. The successful candidate will teach Years 5 – 8 and ideally have experience of teaching up to scholarship level or beyond.
Westminster Under School is a busy, passionate and purposeful place, where pupils greatly enjoy the activities of learning and are given the support and guidance they need to develop as intelligent, compassionate and inquisitive individuals. Maths is extremely important within the School and pupils, who work far beyond their chronological age, attach great importance to their achievements in the subject. We are lucky to attract some of the best mathematicians in the city, and it is a real pleasure teaching such inquisitive and curious minds.
Some highlights of the Maths department include the following.
- We compete in many external competitions, including the FMC, PMC, JMC, IMC and TMC. We have experienced much success in these over the years. For example, in last year’s JMO, a student of ours was the only student out of all participants across the UK and World to score full marks (70/70). Another example of our mathematical dominance is the TMC, where we have five consecutive podium finishers, as can be seen towards the bottom of this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_Mathematics_Trust
- Our subject has a very high profile here and, as such, our calendar of events is varied and creative, and consequently really enjoyable to deliver. It includes the Speedcubing competition, assemblies (such as those celebrating Pi Day, poetry day and house music), trips (such as Bletchley and the London Stock Exchange), movie nights, code breaking and external speakers (such as Rob Eastaway).
- Two weekly pieces of provision are our iconic ‘Maths Hat’ and ‘Maths Clinic’. Our renowned ‘Maths Hat’ tends to have dozens, if not hundreds, of entrants each week. ‘Maths Clinic’ uses student doctors to support and extend.
- We teach from a bespoke scheme of work which utilises David Rayner’s textbooks, interleaved with in-house resources, thought-provoking problem solving & four online platforms (Atom, Mangahigh, Eedi & Parallel). There is room in the curriculum to digress and weave one’s personality into the delivery. The result is a program that engages, supports, enriches and stretches the pupils in equal measure.
This is a particularly exciting time for the school, as we are moving into a state-of-the-art new building ahead of our expansion into early years and co-education.
