Key purpose of the role Enable the Trust to realise its mission to 'Transform lives, strengthen communities and make the world a better place by ensuring the provision of a secure and welcoming facility by managing and assisting with the cleaning of the school premises. This will be following a cleaning rota with daily, weekly and term time components. The post holder may have contact with children. Your responsibilities
Decision Making
- The job involves working from instructions but making minor decisions involving the use of initiative. Problems are referred to a line manager. Little close supervision is necessary beyond that provided by working arrangements and methods.
Health & Safety:
- Be aware of the responsibility for personal Health, Safety and Welfare and that of others who may be affected by your actions or inactions.
- Provide First Aid as required and directed.
- Cooperate with the employer on all issues connected with Health, Safety and Welfare.
Accountabilities:
- Responsible for health, safety, conduct and wellbeing of all cleaners
- Arrange the cleaning rota for cleaners, ensuring all areas are covered with the staff available
- Assist with work familiarisation and instructing new members of staff
- Play a role in the recruitment of new staff
- Ensure the smooth running of the cleaning arrangements by anticipating and dealing with problems.
- Assist with the daily, weekly and term time cleaning requirements.
- Ensure the area being cleaned is safe for colleagues and students with a high standard maintained at all times.
- Safe use and maintenance of cleaning equipment reporting any defects to machinery and buildings.
- To challenge poor performance and work with the Director of Finance to ensure performance standards are maintained.
- To monitor time keeping of all cleaners and report to the Director of Finance as necessary.
- Undertake other duties as directed and commensurate with the grading of the role
Your responsibilities
Demands:
- Some ongoing considerable physical effort is required with periodic requirements for considerable effort to be used when moving chairs, desks and other school furniture in order to undertake cleaning duties.
- General awareness required with short periods of concentrated attention when cleaning areas populated with colleagues or students.
- Occasional mental demands associated with managing a large team, dealing with conflict and ensuring high standards are maintained at all times.
Working Conditions:
- There will be considerable exposure to unpleasant working conditions while undertaking cleaning duties.
- There will also be exposure to chemical cleaning materials (with due regard to COSHH regulations).
- There may be requirement to dispose of medical/clinical waste usually in special schools.
Experience, Knowledge, and Qualifications:
- Literacy and numeracy skills to fulfil the duties of the role such as producing cleaning programmes and adapting these as required.
- A commitment to, and understanding of, Equal Opportunities.
- Full on the job training and induction programme with be provided and no previous knowledge, experience or qualification is required.
Skills and Technical Competencies:
- Oral communication skills are required to exchange straightforward information with work colleagues. Some tact may be required.
- Judgement is required for identifying cleaning materials and methods dependent on surfaces and objects being cleaned and also to identify whether to move paperwork or other items in classrooms, offices or staff rooms.
- Interpersonal skills for communicating routine job-related information mainly with colleagues but could include other people within the school environment.
- Operation of a range of mechanical cleaning aids including vacuum cleaners and floor polishers.
- In this role there are no particular requirements for developed physical skills.

- Work within the requirements of the Academy's Health and Safety policy, performance standards, safe systems of work and procedures.
- Undertake all duties with due regard to the corporate equalities policy and relevant legislation
Physical Requirements:
- Lifting of cleaning machinery - manual handling training will be provided
Health & Safety:
- Ensuring that all aspects of the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) are followed at all times.
- To comply with specific health and safety guidance when carrying out role such as working at height, manual handling, safe working practices, the use of PPE etc.
- Work within the requirements of the Academy's Health and Safety policy, performance standards, safe systems of work and procedures.
- To complete annual Health & Safety training as required.
Grading criteria
- Directly line manages/supervises others within their service
- Follow instructions and procedures which may occasionally need to be adapted to resolve routine problems
- Identify the need, assess the situation and initiate action, providing comprehensive guidance, advice and support.
- Undertake work carried out within clearly defined rules and make decisions from a range of established options
- Make decisions which have a material effect on internal operations of their own or other departments.
- Responsible for the proper use and safekeeping of hand tools, small items of equipment and low-cost materials or for the accurate handling and security of small sums of money or financial resources.
- Work maybe subject interruption but the program of tasks will not be subject to significant change.
